The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Friday (9 December) said it detained a fishing vessel and its three foreign crew members in Langkawi waters believed to be illegally smuggling subsidised diesel oil.

Kedah and Perlis MMEA said the agency’s patrol boat detected a local fishing boat and was stopped after displaying several suspicious signs at 5.0 nautical miles west Tanjung Chincin at 10.40pm on 8 December.

Upon inspection, enforcement officers found a hidden space was added with two containers containing 10,000 litres of diesel oil.

The estimated value of diesel oil that was being smuggled is worth RM 21,500.

“The three Thai men, aged between 22 and 59 years, and the boat have been detained and have been brought to Bukit Malut Maritime Jetty for further investigations”, MMEA said.

The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 for violating terms of their licences. If found guilty, they could be fined not more than RM20,000 or jailed for up to two years or both.
