On 29 November, 10 delegates from nine ASEAN countries visited two NYK Group companies to learn about navigational support technology and Japan’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled vessel.

The event was sponsored by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

JMS introduced its 360-degree high-quality large-screen ship-handing simulator, and then offered a presentation about how the system navigates a vessel by calculating optimal routes developed by JMS. The participants listened intently to the explanation.

Shin Nihon Kaisha Co. Ltd. then offered a tour of Japan's first LNG-fuelled vessel Sakigake at Honmoku Pier in Yokohama. An NYK employee explained the company’s environmental initiatives for shifting to LNG fuel, and an active discussion was had.

The tug is equipped with dual-fuel engines that can use either of LNG and diesel oil, depending on conditions.

Compared with conventional tugboats that use marine diesel oil, the ship emits about 30% less carbon dioxide, 80% less nitrogen oxide, and no sulphur oxide when using LNG as fuel.
