The Vietnam Coast Guard on Thursday (21 November) said it has temporarily detained a foreign tanker and two domestic Vietnamese fishing vessels due to an alleged illegal oil transfer operation.
The vessels were spotted together in waters along the border of the Vietnam – Malaysia delimitation line at around 1500 hrs on 17 November.
The foreign ship Eiki Maru 21 was a specialised oil tanker and carried about 150,000 litres of diesel oil without proof of legal origin.
As such, the coast guard has temporarily seized material evidences and simultaneously escorted all three ships to Phu Quoc for further investigation and handling, it said.
Online databases recorded Eiki Maru 21 as a 1987-built 581 dwt oil tanker registered under the flag state of Thailand.
